Internships - General information

An internship, especially an internship abroad, is an opportunity to gain invaluable work experience and is a worthwhile investment to your future career. Not only will you broaden your professional background, but you will also master another language and achieve general social skills.

Since 1993 we have placed more than 7.000 students in both national and international companies and organizations.

The internships are all custom-designed which means that you indicate in your application the time frame, location and especially the type and content of your desired internship. This assures that the internship matches your exact needs and gives you the practical experience you are looking for.

With this information as a framework we compile a job specification portfolio, where we add your other materials (resume, certificates from previous internships and language courses, etc.) We then send the materials on to our local offices, where our local staff actively search for the specified internships, which best matches your demands and interests. There is not a limited number of internships available.

Lenght of internship

So that you can really experience and feel apart of the everyday work life, internships are set in general for a minimum of six to eight weeks in length. Due to visa reasons, the maximum length of an internship shuould not exceed six months.
You decide how long you want your internship to be, before it begins.

For those, who are only want to take a short glimpse into the work life, we can also offer short term internships from two weeks on.

Language prerequisites

Naturally, sufficient knowledge of the language is the key to a successful stay in another country. That’s why, at the beginning of the internship, it’s essential to have strong language skills for the respective country. We offer internship preparation language courses for all levels for those you are not yet proficient. These courses last no longer than eight weeks, even for absolute beginners. The length of the intensive language course depends on your previous knowledge.

If you are already speaking Spanish or Portuguese on a high level, no language course is required.

Accommodation

During the internships we provide accommodation of different types.
All accommodations are carefully selected by us so you are in a relaxed and comfortable environment where you can practise the language you are learning on a daily basis.

Accommodation is available from Sunday before starting the course until Saturday after finishing the course. If you arrive earlier you can book extra-days of accommodation.

Payment

The vast majority of our internships are unpaid due to visa regulations. You should be prepared to do an unpaid internship as we are unable to guarantee a paid internship. However you should try to cover at least a portion of your expenses by applying for a stipend or scholarship. Please contact the study abroad office at your university or institute.

Scholarship, stipend & grant possibilities

Because ELG is an independent organization and does not receive any outside funding, we are unable to issue any scholarships or other means funding ourselves. However there are other outside additional funding possibilities.

Students from countries within the European Union can apply for the Leonardo Da Vinci scholarship to cover a portion of the costs for an internship within the EU (internship, accomodation and language course.)

For further information on program funding that you might be eligible for, contact the study abroad office at your university or institute.

Placement fee

Only if an internship can be arranged by ELG, a placement fee will be charged. There is no placement fee for those who want to book only an intensive language course.

This placement fee includes, for example, the organizational costs of searching and contacting companies to find the placement, taxes, an information package upon arrival and personal assistance while abroad.

Application period

Processing period for applications should not exceed two months. Ideally we prefer to have applications 3 to 4 months before the planned start of an internship to complete all processing.
